How to apply Digital Waterslides (peelable clear coat)

Surface must be clean and free from grease. Cellulose or Two Pack finishes should be left for at least one week before applying transfers to allow vapours to escape. DO NOT FLAT SURFACE before applying transfer. The design has a peelable clear cover coat over the top which can be removed 24 hours after application. If you are worried about the shape or large size of the peelable varnish layer, do not worry as this can be removed.

Steps:

1. Immerse the transfer in luke-warm water for 30 seconds to sometimes up to a couple of minutes. The transfer may curl.

2. Remove the transfer from the water and allow a little waiting time for the water to soften the gum to release the transfer from the backing. At this stage the transfer and backing will flatten out again. Wait until the transfer slides freely on the backing paper by gently sliding with your finger.

3. Slide the transfer so that the design just overlaps the backing paper edge, then apply by sliding out the backing paper from between the transfer and the work piece. Should a corner become bent underneath, this can be teased out with a fine sewing needle. Be careful not to puncture the transfer at this point.

4. Position and eliminate air bubbles by gently brushing over the transfer with an artist’s paintbrush or with the moistened side of little finger. Check again after 10-15 minutes and repeat the procedure if necessary.

6. Allow 24 hours for the transfer to fully dry, then carefully unpick a corner of the varnish layer and begin to slowly pull it off the workpiece whilst checking that the printed design remains on the surface. If the design lifts, try from another corner instead or leave the transfer for a few more hours. After, we recommend clear coating to seal the transfer onto the surface for long term durability.

You can also choose to keep the varnish layer on the design.
